Spanish Language classes at Wabash High School offer students Spanish-language content focused on four major goals: Communication, Cultures, Connections and Communities.
Communication: With over 400 million Spanish speakers worldwide and more than 33 million in the United States alone, Spanish is the 2nd most-spoken language in the US. Therefore, it is our goal for students to become bilingual in order to function in a variety of situations for multiple purposes. We strive to foster interpersonal, interpretive, and presentational communication.
Cultures: Spanish-speaking countries have a rich heritage and culture. The goal for our students is for them to interact with cultural competence and understanding. We focus on our students’ ability to use the language to investigate, explain and reflect on the relationship between the practices and perspectives of the culture studied. The ability to speak effective Spanish allows students to understand important insights which monolinguals cannot, enabling a greater understanding while traveling Spanish-speaking countries.
Connections: Latin American countries are some of the most important trade partners of the United States. Because of this, we want our students to connect with other disciplines and acquire information and diverse perspectives to function in academic and career-related situations. As bilingual speakers in Spanish, we believe our students will have a unique advantage in the job market, no matter what profession they pursue.
Communities: Just as Spanish-speaking countries have a rich culture and heritage, community is a major part of the family structure. The goal for our students is that they learn to communicate and interact with cultural competence in order to participate in multilingual communities at home and around the world. Whether you learn Spanish or another language, being bilingual will make a difference in all areas of life, allowing interaction with other cultures and communities.
While these four major goals are the overarching focus of all course levels of Spanish offered at Wabash High School, the emphasis for each goal is differentiated with each level of Spanish offered.
